There are codes and conventions. Codes and conventions are split into three groups. The following three groups for the code and conventions are:
- Technical (camera techniques and shots)
- Symbolic (colour, lighting, clothing etc)
- Written and Audio (music etc)
Technical: Technical codes are equipment that are used in a story in media text. For example, the camera work that is being used in a film. This being the techniques applied when using the camera, whether it being tracking, panning, POV (point of view) and other camera movement techniques within media.
Symbolic: Symbolic codes are codes that show us what is beneath the surface. For example, a symbolic code can be shown by a characters action. If a character is crying, us as an audience would straight way think that the character is sad, under stress and emotional. If a character is clentching their fist, we think of violence or a fight.
The code and conventions in my opening sequence that I am making with my group is around the genre of mystery horror, as we have a killer in the opening that is never revealed. The codes and conventions that have been applied to the opening sequence is the lighting. Majority of the scenes in the opening sequence that I am working on with my group is dark. This is because the dark represents danger and we thought it would be a good idea to keep the killers actions at night instead of the day creating it more mysterious. I thought with my group that we had to make the audience think about who the killer may be.
